Brazil, Argentina Seek to Bring Cuba Into Mercosur Trade Bloc

Member nations of Mercosur will seek to boost economic and political ties with Cuba in a bid to make the communist island an associate member of the South American trade bloc.

Brazil’s Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, speaking to reporters at a summit of Mercosur leaders in Foz de Iguacu, Brazil, said that member states also agreed on a time frame of 10 years to eliminate exceptions to the bloc’s common external tariff.

Our latest survey offers insight into how executives perceive the growing market influence of emerging economies, a topic that has received much attention as the world economy emerges from recession. Strong majorities of respondents expect Brazil, China, and India to become more influential over the next five years, while more expect the influence of the United States, the Eurozone, and Japan to decrease than to increase or even remain the same.1 Nearly three-quarters of those who expect any profit or revenue from emerging markets expect the share to increase. And 61 percent say governments should make it easier for companies to invest or do business in their countries—a share that skews higher among respondents in most developing economies.

Deloitte Survey: Talent Shortage Looming

Despite high unemployment rates across many leading economies, finding good talent is the number one concern of business leaders, according to a new survey by Deloitte and Forbes Insights.

Based on feedback from 334 senior executives and talent managers at large companies throughout the world, 41 percent say finding top employees is their biggest challenge. The extent of the problem varies by geography, highlighting where leaders perceive the most prevalent talent shortage. In Europe/Middle East/Africa, the average share of those identifying recruiting as their biggest problem is 48 percent, the average across Asia-Pacific countries is 41 percent and just 35 percent in the Americas.

A survey of CFOs by Bank of America Merrill Lynch found that 47% said they expect their companies to hire additional employees in 2011. That compares with 28% who forecast the same in last year's survey.
